AnInconvenientTruth
I finally saw "An Inconvenient Truth" Last night. Then again earlier today.

There's nothing like a great graph to prove a point. And Al had several great graphs.

I'll admit: Al Gore has a tendency to ramble on at great length about very personal and seemingly extraneous matters before eventually tying back into his point with, frequently far-fetched, analogies in his movie. I can't help think that it would have been far more impressive just to see him give his presentation without the constant interruptions of personal tragedy, triumph and past political bitterness. (Though I do believe he has a right to be bitter). Al frequently comes across as arrogant, sometimes even smug, but if you had been sitting on the information he had for as long as he had; if you had given the same presentation; if you had argued the same points; shared the same facts; and battled the same battle, again and again, for as long as he has...

well you just might be a little uppity too.

All in all the movie carries an important message and lays out the facts in the near idiot-proof style (line graphs/pie charts) to which our general population has become so accustomed. Also all the packaging materials used on the DVD (Including stickers) are 100% recycled AND biodegradable. BAM! Double whammy of ecological responsibility!

Now, as promised, I will add more ways to help:

On the inside of the DVD jacket there is a list:

tenthingstodo

CHANGE A LIGHT: Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
DRIVE LESS: Walk, bike, carpool or take metro transit more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don't drive!
RECYCLE MORE: (I already mentioned this one...but it's important) You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.
CHECK YOUR TIRES: (If you do have to drive..) Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere (also good for gas budget$.. not to mention the safety factors).
USE LESS HOT WATER: It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing a low-flow showerhead (350 pounds of Carbon Dioxide saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year).
AVOID PRODUCTS WITH A LOT OF PACKAGING: You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.
ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT: Moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and 2 degrees up in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
PLANT A TREE: A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
TURN OFF ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you're not using them will save thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide per year.
BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: Learn more and get active at ClimateCrisis.net
PLANT A TREE: A single tree will absorb one TON of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. *I know I already listed this one but It's astounding; the amount of damage a single tree can undo; and I don't think it would kill anyone to plant 2 trees. Everyone likes trees.

I already abide by many of these important rules. The rest I am trying hard to abide by.

I have yet to plant a tree (In this decade anyway).

My envirogoal for this week: Get our compost up and running.

Peace, Love and Green Globes
Katie

I still haven't seen that film, I really ought to but just haven't got around to it! I hadn't realised they'd released it on dvd (and dude, recycled cases etc? way cool!)

The suggestions are very cool (if only everyone would do them!) I think, if I recall my random factoid from uni correctly, that if every American changed their 5 (I think) most used lights to energy efficient bulbs they would reduce the co2 by something like half a million tons (nevermind how much money each person would save - which unfortunately is the main driving force for a lot of people behind doing something, they'll only help the environment if it won't cost them anything). It's frustrating when you think something so damn simple as that could make a real impact...

Planting trees? Enormous fun!! As part of my degree (Environmental Science) we went out with a local county council's conservation/countryside officers and planted trees in our first year. In teams with a bit of a competition going on (which team could plant the most). Such fun and of course, great for the environment. I did a few weeks of volunteer work with the same guys over the summer and it was really good fun - from small mammal trapping so they knew what they were preserving the woodlands for, to chopping down invasive species, planting new ones and taking school kids on tours to help them understand why we need to preserve things! Definitely reccomend getting into something like that (if theres anything near you) because it's so varied and good fun!

Though why is it ten things to do when there's atually 11? ;)

Tree planting this summer...

There are more than ample opportunities in BC for tree planting (mostly in the summer). They might be being planted so that one day they can be harvested for lumber, paper, etc. but responsible logging (which replanting is a huge part of) is one of the ways which we have really begun to lessen our impact on the surrounding ecosystem. I'll be looking for a tree-planting camp this summer. It's not the best pay, but it sure is good work.

Hug a tree

I can proudly say that I've surely done my share of tree planting back in school, Our class planted over 100 trees and none of them are meant to be cut down later in their life...

I can also say I'm 100% Pro-Recycling... I always put the veggies with the veggies, the plastics with the plastics, the glass with the glass and the paper with the paper...

I have to admit I didn't know about the light bulbs though, I'll be sure to look into that, Thanks for mentioning it...

I drive a 45KM car, Which is basically one of the more environment-friendly vehicles, Going far for less fuel then the average car...

Thanks for these helpful tips Katie, And I'll be sure to check out Al Gore's movie once I can get my hands on it...

Let's save the world,
Angel :)

Its funny how little New York recycles. It doesnt even need to be sorted. I used to go turn in glass and plastic bottles when I was younger, but have gotten busy recently.

I admit, I don't do much by way of planting trees, but I do try to conserve electricity. unless I'm using something I try not to leave it on. My dad is horrible though, leaving 3 or 4 TV's on at any given moment, and watching 2 TV's at the same time.

Once I'm on my own, I'll have a little more choice on how much I contribute to the cause

Wtf? o_O Most people I know (...or all of them?) don't even have access to 4 TVs at the same time or 2 TVs so close to each other that you can watch both of them. ^^

well actually the reason is, when my cousins or people we know in the neighborhood started upgrading to plasma, LCD, etc, we took their old fashion ones. my dad's life revolves around TV, so now he has more to tape his shows on. most of them are only 15" though, we do have 3 big screens, 1 in the family room, 1 in my moms, and 1 in mine.

sad thing is I don't use my TV unless I'm watching stargate, a Katie movie I taped, or am playing a game. My computer is a different story

I'm guessing that his original presentation didn't have all those personal stories woven in, and that was primarily for the book/movie.'

Still, it was very powerful, and I'm trying my best to abide by all of those things as well.

Hmm... Tough one. If everything else fails and the plugs and fuses are out of reach these might help:

Windows XP:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 0

Linux (and compatible OSs):
su -
[enter root password]
shutdown -h now

For me that movie was life changing! I just wrote a blog myself about that and another movie I saw called Who killed the Electric car.

Glad to see you out there, and someone else caring about it.

Likewise.... it's nice to know that there are lots of us out there who are acknowledging the mess we're in. If you liked "An Inconvenient Truth" you should really check out "The End of Suburbia". - I haven't actually made it all the way through "Who killed the Electric Car?". I started it yesterday and had to turn it off like 15 minutes into it, but I have a feeling that a lot of the issues in "..Electric Car" are in the same phylum as those of "The End of Suburbia". The main difference being; while the first movie asks the question "WHO killed the electric car?"; the second asks Why? I'll just let you watch it though.

Katie is such a Canadian! Plant a tree, drive less, buy more unpacked goods etc. I really like such an attitude. If more of you would do that, then my children will not get wet feet in 30 years or so. Four meters below sea-level seems so uncomfortable right now ...
The Brits actually seem to see this as a bonus of global warming, the dissappearance of Holland, that is ........

While I certainly would never denounce my Canadianness, it really isn't about Canadian/American, British/Hollander, Cuban/Haitian any more. It's about being Earthlings. And about not putting aside our many differences but embracing them and utilizing the innumerable opinions and ideas that every-day people are having every day. Everyone can help and everyone must help if we're really going to create visible change in our lifetime.

Thanks for reacting, Katie!
You're right of course, it's not about national differences, but the latest Climate Conference on Bali has left me not optimistic, with regards to the behaviour of the USA, and also India (a bit) and China (a bit less). But, as one participant puts it, "This (fragile) agreement at least keeps a free spot at the table for the next US president." Which, the world hopes is not a republican.

of course, if you've noticed recently in the news, Al uses more energy in ONE of his many houses over one month than most households in the country do all year

the movie was a huge deal at my school - they showed it over two days, and then there was a big lecture or something on it the next day. I think the main thing is...even though one more person recycling and saving fuel for cars and such is going to make somewhat of a difference, there are always going to be more people who just don't care.
but don't let that discourage you from being more environmental friendly - just don't be one of the ones who don't care

does anyone know how to get a manuscript into a movie??

[info]angelwithsoul

You might want to try and sell your script to a film studio, Don't forget to copyright it under your name or your companys name or else they steal it right off of you leaving you with nothing...

Several suggestions would be:
Warner Bros
Universal Pictures
Paramount Pictures
Or if your realy desperate, Miramax

Most if not all are conveniently located in and around the Los Angeles area...

Those are the big guys though, I imagine it will be very difficult to charter them, However don't give up, If you have a good story they will listen, If one rejects you don't stop trying theres always someone who is willing to put your idea onto film...

You could also try and get into contact with a producer or director, Maybe trough conventions and such and try and pitch your idea to them (Don't know if that actually works though)

Good luck,
Angel

A good way to ensure your copyright is to mail it to yourself in a closed envelope, sealed by the post office. That way you can always prove that you owned those works at the mailing date by presenting the stamped and sealed envelope to the judge during a lawsuit.

Logically I'd say send it to some big shot movie producers fan mail adress and one of those movie studios presidents (AFTER YOU COPYRIGHT YOUR WORK), But the truth is unless you know someone in the bussiness or who has some connections then you got to have a strong will to get your script made into film and a whole dose of luck.

But don't lose hope, With a lot of effort and determination you can achieve great things

Hollywood is tough, But it's not unbeatable :)
