GOOD FLICKS
...everyone loves a good movie, so I therefore theorize that everyone loves a good movie recommendation:

I was recently sitting in my living room noticing how most of the DVD's in our house are scattered about it, rather than on their various shelves. Most of these movies I haven't seen in ages as I haven't been watching much in the way of movies lately (with the exception of "Planet Earth" - a BBC series about ... you guessed it... Earth - which comes more than highly recommended by yours truly). Despite my recent lack of cinematic enthusiasm, I clearly thought it worthwhile enough to write down the name and location of every DVD in the room. So here goes (I'll spare you the tedium of copying the location as well..but just so you know... I made a map .. cough, cough*dork*cough):

In order of appearance (moving counter-clockwise around each surface, counter-clockwise around the room from surface to surface and - when stacked - beginning with the movie(s) on the top and working down to the bottom of said stack(s)). Without further ado:

The table next to the jungle:
- The Georgia Straight: Vol. 41 (May 24-31 2007) .. okay, not a movie, but a great local paper (this issue has no particular significance...it just happened to be there).
- Bell TV magazine featuring an interesting article on "Pan's Labyrinth" .. again, not a movie, but Pan's Labyrinth isn't out on DVD yet so the mag will have to do as credentials for my recommendation.
- Some of our neighbours mail...oops.

- "A broke down melody" ...FINALLY!! A movie! (and one of my favourites)
- "Le Divorce" ... not the best movie in the world, but I love Naomi Watts and Kate Hudson and they're both excellent in it, also it's a bilingual film which is always fun (French/English in case anyone wondered).
- "Bio-Dome" .. YES!!
- "Fern Gully" .. fight the man, protect our forests!
- "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" ... the original (it came free with Pizza one day but is one of my favourites of all time....man ...they just don't make movies like TMNT any more) *Deep longing for nimble asians in foam latex*
- "Encino Man" ... I heart Polly Shore!! That's right. And I'm man enough to admit it.
- "Big Fish" .. epic
- "Charlie & the Chocolate factory"
- "I ♥ Huckabees" ... seriously one of my favourite movies of all time
- "South Park" - season one ... I love that the social/political activist movement of my generation is lead by small town, American 4th graders.
- "Step into Liquid" ...if you've ever surfed, if you've ever thought about surfing, if you've ever watched, wanted to watch, or if you just love the ocean with an amphibious abandon, as I do, then you'll love this movie too.

- "Robin Williams: Live on Broadway" ...s'okay
- "Dogtown & Z-Boys" ... the birth of extreme and the development of hard core.

- A useless ankle weight which came in a box of cereal. ... Remember when they used to give you fun stuff in cereal? Like a compass that didn't work? or a ring that didn't really fit? ... none of this yoga ball, ankle weight crap. ... sorry. I know, I know ... save the ranting for another post.
..underneath the useless ankle weight, which comes with no actual weight in it, is a stack of old-school Nintendo games (YEAH for the original system!!):
- "Ghosts n' Goblins" .. I could never play this game unless there was someone in the room with me because it scared me that much... and sh*t wasn't even 3D then!! ...coughcough*UBERDORK*cough cough cough..
- "Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt/World class track meet" ... ooh a 3 in 1. Yes we still have the duck hunt gun, I have no idea what happened to the track meet mat, but I remember running hurtles and cheating like every time. I may have small legs, but I'm still smarter than you 1980's technology, mUAH ha ha ha! Seriously though, who else still bears a grudge for that damn snickering dog?
- "PAC-MAN" Booya!! Classic
- "Rampage" .. nothing like a little senseless destruction to sooth the inner beast (we had to make do when I was a kid, none of this GTA business).
- "TMNT III: Manhattan Project" .. my favourite nintendo game ever

- Packing tape ... not a movie... real packing tape
- "Tank Girl" ... I'm in love with Lori Petty... one day she will be mine
- "Down with Love" ... so great
- "Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer" ... the original claymation (HELL YES! .. anyone else getting nostalgic?)
- "Open Water Diver Video" ... instructional vid from when my bro and I got SCUBA certified.
- "Canada Russia '72" ... I have yet to watch it all the way through (not that it wasn't good), but I think I know how it ends anyway.
- "Aninconvinienttruth"
- "Robin Hood" .. the disney animated, but I feel obligated to mention my love of all Robin Hood films, "Robin Hood: Men in tights" specifically, but they're all good... even Costner's ... so much blew up.

...then there's some sticky shot-glasses from a time so long ago I can't remember the occasion ... yeesh we need to clean up.

- "Newsies" ... one of my favourite anti-Randolph Hearst films, this one in the form of a disney, live-action, musical with some spectacular songs and some of the greatest Jazz dancing I've ever seen in a movie. It's a great family movie.
- "Bruce Almighty" ... you rock, James Carrey, you rock. ... I worry for the sequel, but have great trust in Steve Carell, so we shall see. Don't let me down buddy.
- "Billabong Odyssey" ... the impetus for my own surfing addiction and definitely on par with "step into liquid"

Stacked on the old broken PC tower in the corner next to the TV:
- "Arrested Development" - season one ... the greatest TV series ever contrived? .. why yes. yes it is.
- "Wonderfalls" - season one ... alas there was only one season, but the show was/is hysterical. Gone before it's time.
- "Rushmore" ..anyone who's seen it knows, and anyone who hasn't... do.
- "Buffy: the vampire slayer" - season two ... oh we have them all... season two is the only one attending the living room DVD bonanza though.

- "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas" ... also one of my favourite books. I was devastated when Hunter S. Thompson exploded himself out of our world for the next. May the force be always with him, and my his force be always with us.
- "Buffy: the vampire slayer" - season one ... okay, two AND one representin'
- "View from the top" ...haha oh good times
- "Forces of Nature" ... still have never seen it all the way through, but I love Sandra Bullock, wouldn't she be awesome to have at a party? you can just see it in her face.
- "Rent" .. nothing compares to seeing it live, but for those of us who don't live in NY and have a million dollars.. in all seriousness; I think it's wonderful that (almost) all the original cast had the opportunity to immortalize this most immutable Rock-popera on film. The live show is mesmerizing.
- "Happytree Friends: Third Strike" ... a SERIOUSLY twisted online cartoon which can also be purchased in DVD format ... not for the faint of heart, squeamish, or die-hard Carebear fans.*
- "Family Guy" - Volume 4 (season 5?), disk 3 ... I couldn't tell you what episodes are on the disk 'cause I can't find the box. .. we're bad

On top of the TV:
- Our DVD player ... essential
- A phone which does not work because we have no house phone line
- A penny

- "Reefer Madness the movie musical" ... if you like musicals (or even if you hate them) this is an absolute must see.. another of my favourite anti-Hearst films. - some extremely mature themes/scenes. It's pretty much the greatest thing I've ever seen. It stems from the original "Reefer Madness" (another recommended watch), a 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film, originally titled "Tell Your Children". In the late '90s two outstounding (= outstanding + astounding) artists, Dan Studney (composer) and Kevin Murphy (Lyricist), got together and transformed the (by this time) ironic propaganda film into an outright Musical parody extravaganza. With the help of my dear friend Andy Fickman (director) Reefer Madness, the offbroadway play, was an instant hit with L.A. audiences and critics alike. After several years of success on stage (across the country) the time had come to capture the marvel on film. And here it is, perched happily upon my TV. I almost pissed my pants on more than one occasion the first time I saw this movie. It's one of those movies that just can't be unfunny, no matter how many times I watch it. It's the culmination of hundreds of people all sharing the same vision. Enough props cannot be given.
- "Thank you for smoking" .. one of the best movies to happen since I ♥ Huckabees
- "The core" ... I LOVE YOU STANLEY TUCCI!!! ..if you love Stanley Tucci as much as I'm sure you all do, you'll watch this movie just for his part in it.
- "Reefer Madness the movie musical" ... oh yes. It's that good. We have two copies (one's my bro's) and they're both stationed rather permanently on top of the TV.
- "Once upon a time in Antarctica" ... a wonderful doc. about antarctica in the spring as well as a fabulous doc. (it's a 2 fer 1) on the adorable, roisterous Adelaide penguins. Both great for anyone as smitten with penguins as I am. (this film has been due back at Blockbuster for months now. MONTHS!)
- "Maria full of grace" ... never watched it, also due back at Blockbuster months ago.

- "PLANET EARTH" - The complete BBC series... the one I've been watching with my brother religiously lately ... one of the greatest doc series I've ever seen. Very broad coverage of vast areas (geog/geol/meteoro/ecolo) and very in depth coverage of very specific areas (microbio). All and all, a fabulous series for anyone and everyone, even if you just watch it for the mind-bogglingly beautiful, panning, wide-angled, landscape shots from the 'copter-cam. It's truly a humbling experience.
- "Clone High" - season one ... I know ... we all died a little inside when Clone High didn't get picked up for a second season. WHY SKUNKY!!?!?! WHY!?!?!!??!??!??!!!?!?!!???!!
- "Running with scissors" ... I love this movie .... if you loved "The Royal Tenenbaums" as much as I did, you'll love this film too. It's a little darker (if you can imagine) but it's so wonderful and has a surprisingly satisfying end. (Also part of my Blockbuster collection)
- "Stranger than fiction" ... hysterical. Will Ferrell really inhabits this movie. Well done, Will. Well done. (Sorry Blockbuster...one day I will bring your movies back....one day)

And now we've come full circle, so to speak. I hope there's at least one movie in my list that you haven't seen or perhaps haven't heard of. I love hearing about good movies, so if anyone's got any that they want to suggest, please do.

Peace, Fuv n' couch spuds
KT

* Just so's you know, I love the Carebears.

PS. Who else loves it when you one-up your spell check? I know I do. Oh spell-check, silly spell-check, of course roisterous is a word. Tsk tsk. One day computers will have feelings and my belittling victories over spell-checks will not just be pathetic but cruel. Don't worry, I'll stop long before then.

..but for now..

HAH!!

Good call on "The Core" - a little silly, but the casting - for the most part - was superb. And yes, that "Duck Hunt" dog must pay ... I think there's a ROM out there that has been modified to allow you to shoot it mid-snicker.

I shall definitely have to take a look at a few titles in that list. I had the good fortune to catch "Planet Earth" on it's terrestrial run over here, it's certainly something to revisit.

My DVD collection is depressingly predictable - big name summer monsters ("LotR", "PotC", etc.) and TV boxsets ("Buffy", "Angel", "The Crow") - and the only "obscure" titles are either not that obscure in your neck of the woods.

However, you asked for suggestions, so I shall suggest:

- "Strange Days" - the best known of my picks; a dystopian cyberpunk/noir crossover with a cast to die for (Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Lewis, Angela Bassett, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, Vincent D'Onofrio and William Fichtner).

- "Hard Core Logo" - Tarantino-approved mockumentary starring Hugh Dillon, Callum Keith Rennie and John Pyper Ferguson (and a cameo from Joey Ramone, amongst others) ... the punk "Spinal Tap".

- "Cold Hearts" - the spiritual sequel to "The Lost Boys" starring Marisa Ryan, Amy Jo Johnson, Christopher Wiehl and a cameo from Fred Norris. Tries a little too hard to be like "Buffy" from a vampire's point of view, but an enjoyable 90 minutes.

- "Evil Aliens" - in the same vein as "Evil Dead" (actually, most of Bruce Campbell's movies!), an incredibly funny splatter b-movie best watched after a few drinks. I date anybody to watch it an not laugh once.

You know what would have made "The Core" into an A+ movie in my books?

You know that scene where they're in a giant geode, and the ship is like stuck on a giant crystal, and they all go outside to "push" - well, really, go go laser through the crystal so they can move again? And there's this one moment the whole cast is crowded around the nose of the ship jammed on this crystal?

Well, right then, all I wanted more than anything in the universe was, from stage left, the Verison Wireless Network guy to walk in, holding his cellphone, stop, say, "Can you hear me now? Good!" and walk off stage right.

Then the whole crew just to do a collective, "WTF?" and then turn and go back to lasering the crystal.

You ought to email VSN and pitch that idea to them - a whole series of commercials where the guy walks in on movies. "Apollo 13" during the re-entry, "Titanic" during the sinking, "Gladiator" during a battle scene, "PotC" during a storm, etc.

Yeah, totally, like what Billy Crystal does during the Oscars, but more so.

Maybe in the Matrix, Neo pops out of his goo pod, and turns, and in the neighbouring goo pod there's the guy.

In LotRs, just after Sam says his line about never being further from the Shire before

Pirates: On the island where they find the rum..

um, yeah, this could be gold.

*LMFAO*

"Independence Day" - inside the mothership control room just before the nuke gets fired into it.

"Return of the Jedi" - after Luke chops off Vader's arm, and the guy pushes past them to cross the bridge.

The possibilities are endless!

Fifth Element - there's an explosion in his cab, and the first person to pop up in the back seat, is the guy, the second is the girl...

"The Day After Tomorrow" The guy can cross them at any point in a number of "trudging across the frozen tundra" scenes. Of course the guy isn't wearing eighty layers of parka or anything, just the normal outfit.

"AI" - When all the aliens are linking together under the ocean to share the robot's memories. The guy wanders in, joins the chain breifly, and leaves.

"The Abyss" When Bud in the alien's ship, with walls or water on each side, the guy joins him and on the wall of water the monitor typing reflects: Can. You. Hear. Me. Now. Good.

Tehe, this is fun...

Who doesn't love TMNT or Rampage for that matter. I couldn't not buy the new Rampage on the Wii since the original came with it.

Hmm, what movies have I liked recently...

-"Man of the Year" was a great comedy, but was serious at some points

-"Hocus Pocus" one of the greatest kids movies I have ever seen, essentually a teenager tries to impress this girl he likes and accidently revives some witches who feed on little kids.

-"Rat Race" if you haven't seen this yet go get it. one of my all time favorite comedies

I probably could think of more, but I need to be up early tommorrow.

Very cool list, heard of most of them. However, this whole post looks a little like, "So the other day I got stoned/high/laid and I thought wouldn't it be nifty to list my entire DVD collection?"

But then I really can't talk about graphs and maps and things. All of my CDs are alphabetical (by movie, since they're all soundtracks) and all of my CDs and DVDs are on an Excell table with information as to director and year the film was made.

Believe it or not, I don't HAVE to be under the influence of anything in particular to have spectacularly, procrastinatory, useless ideas. Nor do I need any "motivation" to act on them. Also, I'm not really sure how 'getting laid' got lumped in with your trio of unlikely accusations, but I can assure you there are many activities which rank higher on my priority list after sex than mapping out every loose DVD in my house. Though, by the sounds of it, you put graphing, charting and alphabetizing pretty high up there so who am I to judge. I do think you need to expand your CD collection. Not that soundtracks aren't amazing, but so is beer, and if all you ever drank was beer you would die. So there you go: Expand thy gamut! ... or die. My logic is flawless.

I dunno...people supposedly smoke after sex, why not reorganize a DVD library?

I fully support randomocity for randomocity's sake. I often do same, and am accused by others of a variety of things from my list.

Well, I was exagerating slightly, I do own about a 1/3 the total size of the soundtracks again of other stuff. Madonna, Euthrymics, SteppenWolf, mostly old rock, Crash Test Dummies, Weird Al, and a fair bit of small folk festival groups I know. I don't really follow bands, I tend to have a few albums of each. Although I have quite a lot of enya.

And, well, I don't drink beer. I hardly drink at all. After drinking the neck of a bottle of cider I'm under the table singing songs.

Though, you're right, I could be more well-rounded in my tastes. I only listen to scores, and I only read sifi. Meh.

How's your world? You hardly post, this is M from Tyee if you've forgotten. I'm married now, too. Now that that's terribly important.

Those are some pretty darn rare movies you've summed up, I have some myself, Still trying to get my lazy ass to rewatch some of them. Some I "had" to sell though, Needed money for other things.

Still can't get over the fact I nearly sold my entire Buffy TVS and Angel DVD Collection... Don't even remember what I bought in return :-\

Rampage... Wow, Now that brings back memories of very low graphics... very... very... low graphics, Insanely low even...

You still have a Nintendo Zapper!?!?... And it still works?!

Gonna see Evan Almighty later, Let you know if its any good, I have no doubt it will be though, Even though Carrey isn't in it, Steve Carell will be able to fill the gap pretty well.

Follow up:

Just saw Evan Almighty, It's right up there with Bruce, Did NOT feel like a wish-Jim-Carrey-was-in-this-sequel kinda thing... It does right on it's own and has a powerful message to give.

"How do we change the world?, One act of random kindness at a time"

This is a movie worth seeing

Peace out,

hmmm there are actually some exciting works of an actress with the name of
Katie Stuart. I even unlocked the regions on my DVD player just for her, cause three DVDs of her, i got from the American continent *cough*thats just one of my many layers of dork*cough*

But now for something completly different: a man biting a dog

"Russian Ark" I won't say too much about what the movie is actually about, but it is a philosophical time travel.
Now for the amazing technical details: One shot
No cut
Yup you heard right. This is the first movie, wich was shot over its entire length in one take. Camera man with hdds in a backpack makes it possible
Literally thousands of people. Three live orchestras
Imagine the 85th of 90 minutes
one guy doing one wrong step
everything has to be redone.......*muahahaha*

"Trueman Show" you didnt mention it, but i am pretty sure you have it, dont you? You just didn't have it in the room

and also
"Gone in 60 seconds"
"Alien 1-4"

Oh and these two
"Tokyo Raiders" and "Seoul Raiders"
i cant say too much about it, without saying too much.
I will mention a cool PI, who is more than a PI. Alot of funny action.

If you're still searching for more movies here comes one of the best movies in the world:

Robert Redford in "The Last Castle".

I think, this movie is so amazing not because of the explosions but because of the moral of the story (if somebody asks for help YOU must help him or her; we're still too egoistic even in this time and that movie criticizes it) and I also love this movie because the character of R. Redford set the life of the other prisoners higher than his own life and that is greatness, that and nothing else. And it's very sad that he dies at the end of the movie.

Well something different Katie. I want to know which character you were is your favorite?

- the date of publication in the United States is April 22, 2008

Hello, interesting post there, I may decide to thieve the idea of listing everything in my room, although my taste is a little narrower than yours. All my films come under the 'Revenge' genre, if there is such a thing. Unless you count Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which I am ashamed to admit I love, and The Postman, which is more of a post-apocalyptic, three-hour epic of a western.

Also nearly finished watching all 22 episodes of the TV sereis 'The Crow - Stairway To Heaven', which I spent THREE MONTHS trying to find, and it was well worth it, even if I did have to import it fom Germany or somewhere. "Who's this, Ben and Jerry?" Priceless. Never smiled at an ice cream based joke before.

To the dude who said who drink's that vile apple beer- If by that you mean Cider, the necter of the Gods, then my friends and I have all spent saturday evenings getting hammered on the stuff. I can't stand beer, Cider is the only alchol I can stomach. Hell, even my band (which I'm still the only member of), Olde English, is named after my favorite Cider. Just stay away from White Lightning, and you'll be fine. I'm something of a expert on these things.

Great post anyway.

I've just finished reading your journal but I still have 2 questions:

#1: What's with your philosophy on life? I think that 3 years is a long time and
perhaps there was something which changed your opinion.

#2: What would you like to do or be if your current job gets boring (hopefully never
because I want to see you in more movies) but then you should become a writer.

Well...movies! I find these guys have said many movies but I'm sure there are still movies in my room.

- Forrest Gump (it always makes me sad)
- Sphere (a great movie)
- Star Trek Nemesis
- House, M.D. (not a movie but one of the best TV series I've seen; I love this
sarcasm)
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2

Have fun with the movies and keep doing.
